Terraria: How to make a bed

With the latest update for Terraria Journey's End is finally out, for now... Many people are flocking back to the game to try out all the new features and acquire the new vanity contest outfits now patched in. Loads of people no doubt waited till Journey's End was completed, or perhaps gamers have been caught up in the hype of the pixelated mining game and thought it's about time I gave this a try! There is a lot to get your head around, but if you've played the likes of Minecraft, you'll have a better understanding of how to get yourself started. One of the most important things to craft as soon as possible is the bed. So how do you make a bed a Terraria?

Bed materials

To make a bed for yourself, you need a few basic materials - Wood x15 and Silk x5. It sounds pretty simple, but it'll take you a while to craft it. You need a few things to get yourself started first. You will have spawned with a few tools to help you get going - a pickaxe and an axe. Use your axe to chop down trees and chop down a lot of them in the starting area you appeared.  Wood is the easiest thing to acquire in the game, well apart from dirt!

Silk at the start of the game is reasonably difficult to acquire, but not too bad. It depends on how lucky you are. As you go exploring either left or right, you'll eventually start coming across mini-caves, or sometimes tunnels. You want to avoid the tunnels until you're better equipped, though feel free to explore them a tiny bit! Inside these mini-caves, you should occasionally find some cobwebs - these are the materials that you need! However, you need to find in total 35 cobwebs, as it takes 7 cobwebs to make 1 silk.

If you're brave enough to mine deeper to find more cobwebs, and you come across a lot of them at once, it's probably for the best to bail, as that will be a spider's nest. Yes, it's the best place to acquire cobwebs, but in the early stages of the game, spiders are not meant to be trifled with.

This is the easy part as you now need to make a loom and a sawmill, which requires a lot more effort! And to make those you need a furnace and an anvil!

How to make a sawmill and loom?

By now, you've collected all of the wood and the cobwebs. Your little house is starting to feel a bit more homely. You've learned how to make a workbench and have started to craft multiple things! You need 4 things in total to make a bed - a furnace, anvil, sawmill, and a loom. The recipes I'll put below.

  • Furnace
    • Materials: Stone blocks x20, wood x4, and 3 torches
      • The stone you get from mining—wood from trees. Torches can be crafted from a stone block and slime gel, which can be obtained from killing any slime in the starting area.
  • Anvil
    • Materials: 5 Iron Bars
      • 5 Iron Ore turns into 1 Iron Bar at the Furnace.
        • Iron Ore, you'll find quite commonly from mining. It's greyer than stone, or however over it, and the game should tell you what it is.
  • Saw Mill
    • Materials: Wood x10, Iron Bar x2, and a Chain x1
      • At the Anvil, you can craft 1 Iron Bar into 10 Chains.
  • Loom
    • Materials: Wood x12
      • Make this Loom at the Saw Mill

Go to your newly made loom, and turn all those cobwebs into silk. Then go to your Saw Mill, and you can craft a bed! A bed is a spawn point, so if you die, you won't spawn at the exact same location as you did upon entering this world for the first time. You'll always spawn at the bed if you die; it's incredibly handy.

When the bed is made and placed, right-click on it, and a message will pop up saying that the bed is now set as a spawn point. Make sure this message appears, or your bed is practically useless!
